Located in Miami Gardens, Florida, the classic thoroughbred racing facility known as the Calder Race Course shut down a few years ago to give ground to the new Gulfstream Park West, with a single fall meet lasting approximately two months. Since 2010, it also features a massive Casino facility with a 100,000 square-feet gaming area that includes slot machines, roulette, blackjack and video poker. The former Calder Race Course is currently owned and operated by the Stronach Group, who are also responsible for Gulfstream Park.

Covering nearly 220 acres, the Calder Race Course was first conceived by the real estate businessman Stephen A Calder as a summer meet destination that could rival the pre-existing Fall, Winter and Spring meets that were held at Tropical Park, Hialeah Park and the aforementioned Gulfstream Park. Once with the blessing of the Florida state legislature, Calder Race Course opened its doors to the general public on May 6th, 1971. It was subsequently purchased by Bertram R Firestone, Kawasaki Leasings and by Churchill Downs Incorporated back on 1999, who propelled the popularity of the site with the addition of rewarding new races such as the Florida Million and the Summit of Speed.

Calder Race Course saw the addition of the brand-new Casino during 2010, thus changing its official name to Calder Casino and Race Course. Sadly, by 2014, the tough competition presented by near-by Gulfstream Park brought about the end of Calder's original running schedule, being fixed to a single Autumn meet that was to be called the new Gulfstream Park West, also ran by the Stronach Group, while Churchill Downs would keep management of the Casino installations.

Calder's main track spans over 1 mile with a seven furlong turf course; its surface is made of a combination of sand, clay and a marl cushion.
