Few horse racing venues can boast a history as long and rich as that of Fair Grounds Race Course. The Louisiana-based track, also known as New Orleans Fair Grounds, was amongst the first pioneers of thoroughbred racing competitions in the continent, alongside the legendary Freehold Raceway during the early 19th century. By 1839, Cajun magnates of the likes of Henry Augustine Tayloe, Bernard de Marigny, and Julius C Branch set about the first 5-day race event at the local Gentilly Road, which came to be known as the Louisiana Race Course.

Fair Grounds Race Course went through many name changes during the 1800s. It was christened as the Union Race Course back in 1852, but soon faced obliteration by the more successful and neighboring Mataire Race Course, having to close its doors on 1857. Then, it was reopened as the Creole Race Course during the latter years of the same decade, eventually -and finally- taking the Fair Grounds Race Course name by which we know it today. Unlike many other horse racing venues of this time period, Fair Grounds remained opened throughout the American Civil War.

Several fires saw Fair Grounds Race Course grandstand completely destroyed, with the most recent disaster taking place during 1993, however, in a similar fashion to the mythical phoenix bird, the New Orleans race course always came back to life, with the latest reconstruction works being completed by 1997. Pedigree is also deeply engrained in every building log of Fair Grounds: the same racing moguls who organized the first races were also responsible for bringing the famous English thoroughbred Diomed, from whose descendants we can count the likes of American Pharaoh and 1973's titan Secretariat.
