In Alfred G. Vanderbilt's' own words: "Pimlico is more than a race track bounded by four streets. It is an accepted American institution, devoted to the best interests of a great sport, graced by time, respected for its honorable past". Throughout the course of two centuries, Pimlico Race Course, located in Baltimore, Maryland, has withstood the abrasive effect of several historical events, including the Great Depression, the Baltimore Riots, the Great Fire of 1904, the Prohibition and even a closing attempt by an anti-gambling movement. Pimlico Race Course is also the proud home of the Preakness Stakes.

Pimlico Race Course owes its very unique name to Baltimore's original settlers, who during the course of the 1660s chose to christen the area after the Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. It has also been widely known as the "Old Hilltop", after an inner land rise where trainers and racing fans gathered to enjoy the races. It officially began operations during the year of 1870, the same instance in which the colt Preakness won the first edition of the Dinner Party Stakes, ever since lending its name to the second jewel race of the famed Triple Crown championship.

The Old Hilltop is also famous for having hosted the Second Pimlico Special, in which Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in front of a staggering audience of 43 thousand people.

During 2010, both Pimlico and Laurel Race Course were sold to the MI Development team, who in turn then transferred all rights to the horse racing powerhouse Stronach Group. The Pimlico Race Course is currently owned and organized by their sister brand, the Maryland Jockey Club. Pimlico features a one-mile-long dirt oval track, joined by an inner seven-furlong turf track.
