Situated in the San Francisco Bay area, and sharing city limits between Albany and Berkeley in the state of California, we will find the Golden Gate Fields horse racing track. It survived the closing tide of racing venues during the mid 2000s and, after the demise of the Bay Meadows racetrack, it stands as the only thoroughbred competing for ground in the whole of Northern California. Golden Gate Fields possesses a 1-mile long tapeta track (inaugurated in 2007) and can accommodate about 8000 seating attendees.

This West Coast race track has a record unlike most other American thoroughbred locations within the United States. The first accounts have a ranch owned by Jose Domingo Peralta selling the property to a cattle dealer in 1852 for the purpose of moving livestock across the bay area, being subsequently purchased by the Giant Powder Company, that used it to store black powder and other explosives. This time period saw many accidents happen with no less than 4 explosions before the end of the 19th century.

Horse racing activities had been held in the nearby Oakland Trotting track from as early as 1871 until state legislation forced it to close during 1911, a time when California officially prohibited all horse race betting. Golden Gate Fields was finally opened for business on 1941, but during most of the course of World War II it was used as a storage point for landing craft intended for the American troops headed to the Pacific scene of the conflict, resuming horse racing action only after the war was concluded.

In more modern times, Golden Gate Fields horse racing track has made headlines by the introduction of Angela Hermann in 2016, as the first female race caller in the entire history of American racing history. It holds important Grade 3 races such as the El Camino Real Derby, the Berkeley Handicap and the San Francisco Mile Stakes.
