History

The Braves were originally formed as the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association of Professional Baseball players in 1871, making them the oldest continuously playing team in all North American professional sports. That team won four of the league’s first five championships before joining the National League in 1876. Having changed their name to the Red Caps, they have the honor of playing in the first game in the history of the National League on April 22 of that year. In 1883 the team re-named themselves the Beaneaters. In 1901, when the AL began operations and the Boston Red Sox came into being, a lot of players from the Beaneaters jumped ship because they could get better contracts with the new club. After a period of futility, the team started using the name Braves in 1912. In 1914 they had a great turnaround season, winning the pennant after having been in last place on the Fourth of July.

Over the next 40 or so years, the team endured ups and downs in Boston, at two different points changing their name to the Rustlers and the Bees. In 1934 they managed to sign Babe Ruth, who was in the twilight of his playing career. Ruth was awful in his time there and retired that same season. Not until the 1940s did the Braves become competitive again, winning pennants in ’46 and ’47 before taking the World Series Title in 1948. In 1953, due to failing support, the team moved to Milwaukee.

In Wisconsin, the Braves again found success, especially thanks to the arrival of Hank Aaron, the future home run record breaker. In 1957 they won the pennant against the Cardinals before capturing the World Series from the Yankees in seven games.

The team continued to put up winning records but was not able to reach the postseason for the first part of the 60’s and by 1966 the team was sold to Atlanta.

Titles

As the Atlanta Braves, the team would not appear in a pennant series until 1991, enduring 34 years of unimpressive results. In 1990 they finished with the worst record in the Major Leagues but used the offseason to re-tool and came back with a stellar young pitching squad featuring Tom Glavine, Steve Avery and John Smoltz. The Braves then began a rapid ascension that culminated in 1995 with a World Series Championship against the Cleveland Indians. Tom Glavine won MVP in that series.
