Houston Astros Betting Odds

As the second Major League Baseball team in the State of Texas, the Houston Astros were originally named the Houston Colt .45s and were incorporated into the National League in 1962 along with the New York Mets. They switched over to the American League in 2013 as part of an MLB divisional realignment. After a few years of futility that followed the move, the team finally won its first World Series in 2017.

History

The Houston Colt .45s began their inaugural season playing out of Colt Stadium, an unimpressive, one-level grandstand that served as a temporary home for the team while the Astrodome was under construction.

Once the move to the Astrodome was complete, the team was renamed the Astros, giving homage not only to the new stadium – the first domed building in the league- but also as a nod to the city of Houston as a center for the NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center. While the move to the new building improved attendance – people came from miles around just to see the dome – it did nothing to improve the results of the team on the field. The Astros remained at the bottom of the standings for another five seasons.

In 1999, the team moved out of the Astrodome and into Minute Maid Park, where they have played ever since.

Titles

Houston’s one World Series appearance was an event for the ages. In seven wild games against the LA Dodgers, the Astros put on a show for baseball fans and won the hearts of spectators everywhere. The series came in the same year that Hurricane Harvey had ravaged the Houston Area earlier that year, forcing the Astros to move a three-game series against the Texas Rangers to Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, FL. The Astros did not let the tragedy affect their play that season and finished the year with a 21 game lead in their division. They faced the Red Sox in the first round of the AL playoffs and beat them three games to one. The Astros then went on to beat the Yankees in the ALCS in seven games before facing off against the Dodgers. In that series, both teams set a record with a combined 25 home runs, 15 of which were from the Astros (also a record).

Famous players

Among the most famous players to suit up for the Houston Astros are Jeff Bagwell, who pitched five seasons for the team between 1991 and 2005. Bagwell was named NL MVP in 1994 and was a 4-time all-star.

Also of note is Nolan Ryan, who played for the Astros from 1980 to 1988. Upon his signing, he was the first million dollar player in MLB history. Ryan recorded his 3,000 strikeouts while playing for the Astros and later broke the all-time strikeout record when he retired Brad Mills of the Expos in 1983 to give him 3,509 on his career.
