Minnesota Twins Betting Odds

The Twins franchise has been in existence since 1901, when they were the Washington Nationals, one of the eight original teams of the American League. They moved to Minnesota in 1961 and have played out of the Twin Cities ever since. Nicknamed ‘the Twinkies’ by their fans, they are a fixture in the Minnesota sports landscape along with the NFL’s Vikings, who came into existence in the same year.

History

As an original AL team in Washington DC, the Nationals were a bottom-feeding team for much of their existence. Their best seasons were in 1912 and 1913 when they finished in second place in the AL for both of those years. In 1924 the team made it to the World Series, where they beat the New York Giants in 7 games. The team repeated as American League champs the next year but lost the series. They would make it to the World Series again in 1933, but that time they lost to the same Giants they had beat years earlier. From 1934 on, the team suffered terribly and was eventually moved to Minnesota after longtime owner Clark Griffith died and left the team to his adopted son, who sold Griffith Stadium back to the city and re-named the team the Twins. The team played its games at the Metropolitan Stadium for 20 years before moving to the Metrodome in 1982, where they stayed until moving to Target field in 2010.

Titles

The 1924 Nationals team that won the World Series featured a couple of Hall of Fame players in Walter Johnson, Joe Cronin, Heinie Manush and Bucky Harris. The year they won the series, Johnson won 23 games as a pitcher, helping his team capture the AL pennant for the first time in franchise history. The Nats were heavy underdogs to the Giants in the final, which was a brutal back and forth series where three of the first six games were decided by one run.

The team would make it back to the World Series again in 1965, but it was not until 1987 that the team won another Fall Classic. The 1987 team was pitted against the St Louis Cardinals, who they defeated in seven games.

The Twins most recent World Series win, in 1991 against the Braves is considered one of the best series of all time. The series again took seven games, with five of the contests being decided by a single run and four games decided by the final at-bat. In all, there were a record 69 innings played over seven games. Minnesota pitcher Jack Morris was given the MVP award.

Other famous Twins include Kent Hrbek, Rod Carew, and Tony Oliva.
