New York Mets Betting Odds

From the worst record in history to World Series Champions just seven years later, the Mets were one of the original expansion teams in Major League Baseball, brought in to compensate for the loss of the Giants and the Dodgers, who had moved from New York in the previous decade. Situated in Queens, the Mets play in the National League and feature the colors of the two teams that they replace; Dodger blue and Giant orange. Those two colors also happen to be the colors of the New York State flag.

History

The name Mets comes from a shortened version of an older organization that used to play in New York in the 1800s, the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club. The team originally played their games at Polo Grounds, which was once the home of the Yankees. In 1964 they moved to Queens, where the newly built Shea Stadium stood. The Mets stayed at Shea for 44 years, winning two World Series and four National League Pennants.

In 2009 the team moved into Citi Field, which was built adjacent to Shea Stadium.

Titles

The Mets have appeared in five World Series, more than any other expansion team in league history. Their most famous World Series was their first in 1969, just seven years after their inception in the league. That year they upset the Orioles in five games, considered one of the greatest upsets of all time.

Their other World Series win, in 1986, came against the Boston Red Sox. That year the Mets finished the Regular season with a record of 108-54, the best in their history. In the NLCS they took on the Houston Astros and won 4 games to 2, which vaulted them to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. The Mets lost the first two games of that series and by game six were facing elimination. That game would go down in history when the Red Sox where one out away from winning in their first World Series in 68 years in the tenth inning, only to have Bill Buckner miss a ground ball that allowed the Mets to score and win the game and eventually the series.

Famous players

The Mets count 16 former players and managers that are now in the Hall of Fame. Most of them are players who spent the majority of their careers on other teams. The players in the Hall representing the Mets are catcher Mike Piazza and Pitcher Tom Seaver. Some of the other more famous names include Yogi Berra, who played his final season for the Mets in 1965, Tom Glavine and Nolan Ryan.
