History

What is not well known about the Yankees is that the team was originally based in Baltimore. In 1901 when the American League first began to play, the team was the original Baltimore Orioles. That arrangement only lasted until 1903, when the team’s new owners decided to move the Orioles to New York and rename them the Highlanders. The Highlanders played their games out of Hilltop Park in upper Manhattan for nine years until the team started sharing Polo Grounds with the then-NY Giants (now in San Francisco). In 1913 the team changed its name to the Yankees.

After a decade of team building, which included the signing of the legend Babe Ruth and their first World Series Victory, the Yankees moved into their own stadium in the Bronx. The team stayed in their new home, Yankee Stadium, for 85 years and won 25 titles there.

In 2009, the Yankees moved into a new Yankee Stadium built across the street. The old stadium was demolished and turned into a park. That same year the Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 2 in the World Series.

Titles

With 27 total World Series titles, the Yankees are the winningest team in all of the North American pro sports. The next runner up is the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens, who have won 24 titles.

New York’s last World Series win was the one in 2009, the first in their new stadium. After opening the season by playing error-free baseball for the first 18 games (a major league record), the Yankees went on to place first in the AL East. In the playoffs, they swept the Twins and defeated the Angles in 6 games before facing the Phillies, who they also beat in six.

Famous players

Alongside having the most titles in Baseball, the Yankees also have the most retired numbers. Twenty-three players numbers are retired, and they read like a list of all time greats. Right Fielder Babe Ruth is the most famous, having set a record for career home runs (714) RBI (2213), among others.

Center fielder Joe DiMaggio played his entire 13-year career with the Yankees and set a record for consecutive hits with 56. The record still stands today. DiMaggio was a three-time MVP and an all-star in each of his 13 seasons. He won nine World Series in that span.

Catcher Yogi Berra won 10 World Series Championships as a player and had a batting average of .285 with 358 home runs and 1,430 RBI.

Mickey Mantle was also a lifelong New York Yankee. The Centerfielder won 7 World Series with the Yankees and was an All-Star for 20 seasons.

Other greats that played for the Yankees include Derek Jeter, Roger Maris, Lou Gehrig, Don Mattingly, and Reggie Jackson, among many others.
