History

The first Washington team to play in Major League baseball was the Senators of the National League which played from 1892 to 1899. That team collapsed and was later reformed in the American league in 1901 as the Senators, who were often called the Nationals. That team stayed in Washington until 1956, when they moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. A second Senators team then appeared, but they moved to Texas in 1971 and became the Rangers.

In 1969 the team that would eventually become today’s Washington Nationals started playing in Montreal and were called the Expos. They were part of an MLB expansion that year that included the Seattle Pilots, the Kansas City Royals, and the San Diego Padres. As the first MLB team to be based in Canada, the Expos played in Olympic Stadium, which was built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. The team had early success, winning 95 games in only its second season, but was never able to build a winning team again until 1981, when they won their first division title. The team would not win a division title again, and in 2002 the team was sold to the MLB.

The League announced that the Expos would move to Washington DC in 2005 and played their first few seasons in Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. In 2008 they moved to Nationals Park, located along the Anacostia River in Washington DC.

The team started its tenure in Washington with a long-term plan to bring the franchise to success. The plan included developing a farm system and preparing for drafts to have the best influx of talent possible. After back to back first round picks in 2009 and 2010, the Nationals were up and running as a successful franchise. They won division titles in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017, but were unable to win the NLDS series in any of those years.

Titles

While the 1980 World Series victory was a monumental event for the Phillies, the 2008 win was a breeze. The Phillies cruised to a second straight division title and defeated the Brewers in the division series before taking down the LA Dodgers in five games in the NLCS. In the World Series, the Phillies again showed dominance, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in 5 games.

Famous players

Dating back to their time as the Montreal Expos, this franchise has had several interesting players. Andre Dawson spent ten years with the Expos, winning rookie of the year in 1976 before racking up 8 Gold Glove awards and eight all-star appearances. Vladimir Guerrero played for the Expos from 1996-2003 and was a four-time all-star in that span while also winning three Silver Slugger awards. The Nationals have been the home of Frank Robinson, who was a manager for the team as well as Ivan Rodriguez, who played for two seasons before retiring in 2011.
