Charlotte Hornets Team History

A relatively new team, the Charlotte Hornets have struggled for most of the franchise’s history as it has yet to win an NBA championship or even make an NBA Finals. The original Charlotte Hornets were founded in 1988 as an expansion team. They played in North Carolina until 2002, when the owner decided to move the team to New Orleans, which would later be rebranded as the New Orleans Pelicans. The current franchise was founded in 2004 as the Charlotte Bobcats. After the New Orleans franchise decided to rename themselves as the New Orleans Pelicans, the franchise gave the Charlotte club the Hornets name back, along with the records and official history of the franchise during its tenure in Charlotte between 1988 and 2002.

Charlotte Hornets Championships

The Charlotte Hornets have not only never won the Larry O’Brien trophy, but they also have never made it the Finals, having never won a conference title or even a division title. The Hornets had their best record during the 1996-1997 season when the team, led by Glen Rice, Anthony Mason, and Dell Curry, finished with a 54-28 record that was good for a tie for third in the Central Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference. That team would lose in a three-game sweep against the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. The franchise would return to the playoffs with a 51-31 record the following year and would win its first-round matchup against the Hawks before falling to the Chicago Bulls in five games in the second round. The club has not had much playoff success in recent years, with the Hornets having won their last playoff series all the way back in 2002.

Charlotte Hornets Famous Players and Hall of Famers

He might be more well known for being the father of Steph Curry, one of the best shooters in NBA history, but Dell Curry made a name for himself long before his son started draining clutch three-pointers on the hardwood. Curry spent ten years with Charlotte from 1988 to 1998, winning the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1994. When Curry retired, he held the Hornets’ franchise record for points with 9,839 (Kemba Walker has since surpassed him) and three-point field goals made with 929. Curry has stayed with the franchise after retiring as a player and has served as the Hornets’ color commentators.

Speaking of the franchise’s points leader, Kemba Walker has spent the first eight seasons of his career with Charlotte and has scored 12,009 points, more than 2,000 more points than Curry. Walker has been named to three All-Star teams during his tenure in Charlotte and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2019. Walker also ranks first in franchise history in minutes played (20,607) and second in most assists behind Muggsy Bogues (3,308). During the 2019 offseason, Walker left Charlotte in free agency for the Boston Celtics.
