Los Angeles Clippers Team History

One of two teams sharing the massive spotlight of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Clippers may not have the illustrious history of their rival Lakers. Still, the Clippers have shown they’re willing to spend big and gamble on seeking their first championship. The Clippers were established in 1970 as the Buffalo Braves as one of three expansion teams with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Portland Trailblazers. The team would relocate to San Diego in 1978 as the San Diego Clippers. The franchise would then move to Los Angeles in 1984 without the approval of the NBA, leading to a controversial and litigious battle that eventually saw the club permitted to stay in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Clippers Championships

The Los Angeles Clippers have never won an NBA championship and has never even made it to an NBA Finals, having never won the Western Conference Championship. The club saw its best run of success during the 2010s with the additions of Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, and DeAndre Jordan forming “Lob City” that culminated in the franchise’s first and second division titles in 2013 and 2014 and led to playoff appearances seven times from 2012 to 2019. The Clippers made a big splash in the summer of 2019, signing two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and trading for Paul George to try to build a championship-caliber team.

Los Angeles Clippers Famous Players and Hall of Famers

One of the members of “Lob City,” the arrival of Blake Griffin, began the turnaround for the Los Angeles Clippers, transforming the team from a perennial laughingstock to a playoff contender. A six-time NBA All-Star and Rookie of the Year, Griffin dazzled fans with his play above the rim, even earning the Slam Dunk Contest trophy during the All-Star weekend. Griffin ranks second in points scored in team history with 10,863 points and third in rebounds with 4,686. Griffin was traded to the Detroit Pistons in the middle of the 2018 season.

Joining Griffin in “Lob City” was DeAndre Jordan, who played for the Clippers from 2008 to 2018. Jordan and Griffin often found themselves on the finishing end of highlight-reel plays. During his time in Los Angeles, Jordan finished as the eighth-highest scorer in franchise history with 7,078 points. Jordan leads the franchise in rebounds (7,988) and blocks (1,277). Jordan was an integral part in helping the Clippers reach the postseason so many times during their run in the 2010s.

Before “Lob City” and Griffin, Jordan, and Chris Paul, there was Randy Smith, who played for the Buffalo Braves and San Diego Clippers from 1971 to 1979 and then again with the San Diego Clippers for the 1982-1983 season. Smith holds many of the Clippers’ franchise records, including points scored (12,735), steals (1,072), and minutes played (24,393). Smith also ranks second in assists with 3,498 and ranks in the top 10 in rebounds, despite playing the forward position at just 6-foot-3.
