New Orleans Pelicans Team History

NBA basketball returned to the city of New Orleans in 2002 when the Charlotte Hornets relocated the team to the Big Easy as the New Orleans Hornets. Hurricane Katrina moved the team temporarily to Oklahoma City, where they were known for two seasons as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets before returning to New Orleans in 2007. In 2013, the team officially renamed themselves the New Orleans Pelicans, returning the Hornets’ name and the club’s history and records from its time in Charlotte to the Charlotte Bobcats, which became the Charlotte Hornets in 2014.

New Orleans Pelicans Championships

In more than a decade and a half, the New Orleans Pelicans are still searching for their first championship and trip to the NBA Finals. In their first season back in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, the club won their first division title and punched a ticket to the postseason as the second overall seed in the Western Conference playoffs. The Hornets defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the team’s first-round matchup but then fell to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games in the conference semifinals. The team would win its second playoff series a decade later by sweeping the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the 2018 playoffs before having their postseason come to an end at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, who beat the Pelicans in five games.

New Orleans Pelicans Famous Players and Hall of Famers

One of the greatest players in the NBA right now, Anthony Davis, also left his mark in the city of New Orleans. Brought in after being drafted with the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, Davis took the league by storm. Davis earned six NBA All-Star selections and was named the All-Star Game MVP in 2017. A three-time All-NBA First Team selection, Davis has been known for his well-rounded game and his blend of size and quickness and ball-handling. A prolific scorer, Davis is the Pelicans’ all-time points leader with 11,059 and also holds several other records, including rebounds (4,906) and blocks (1,121). Davis also ranks second in team history in steals with 639 and sixth in assists with 982. Davis left the Pelicans in 2019 to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

Before Anthony Davis’ arrival in the Big Easy, Chris Paul was the franchise’s superstar, playing with the Hornets from 2005 to 2011. Paul has since played for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Houston Rockets and was traded to Oklahoma City in the 2019 offseason. However, Paul will still be remembered for his work in New Orleans, earning four of his nine trips to the NBA All-Star Game wearing a Hornets uniform. Paul has also made eight All-NBA teams and nine NBA All-Defensive Teams and has led the league in assists four times and in steals six times. Paul ranks third among all New Orleans players in points scored with 7,936 and ranks first in assists (4,228) and steals (1,010).
