The tourney started on Monday, and the big finale for the men’s singles is set for February 2, 2020.

Now, the current champion is Djokovic, who defeated Nadal 6-3, 6-2, and 6-3 back in 2019, acquiring a record seven Australian Open titles, and a third straight Grand Slam title. And, although he’s the current champ, Djokovic himself stated that there are no clear favorites this time around.

In a recent interview, the Serbian acknowledged that he, along with Federer and Nadal are the most familiar faces, he also pointed out to Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, and Stefanos Tsitsipas as talented players with amazing tennis and great chances of winning.

Djokovic will never declare himself the biggest favorite, as that would set him up for failure. But, with the possibility of an eighth Australian Open title in sight, it all points out to a successful championship defense by the Serbian in Melbourne.

Australian Open Betting Odds: Novak with a hard-court advantage over Rafa

Just a few days ago, Djokovic defeated Nadal, allowing him and Serbia to claim the ATP Cup, and that was a clear statement by Novak, who has beaten the Spaniard nine times in a row on a hard court. You would need to return to 2013, at the US Open Final, to witness the very last hard-court win from Rafa over Djokovic.

With so many wins by the Serbian over Nadal, it is clear that Djokovic remains the red hot favorite, no matter what the player himself states.

Can a Next-Gen Get the Title?

All three favorites this year are 30+ veterans, and the world is waiting to see who’s going to be the young player that is going to dethrone one of these giants.

In Djokovic’s opinion, the youngsters are getting closer, but no cigar yet, mentioning that “So everybody keeps on talking about NextGen player winning a Slam. It seems like it’s getting closer. Hopefully, not this year. We’ll see.”

Another one who spoke on the matter was Federer, who’s currently 38 and who was also clear about the fact that himself, Djokovic, and Nadal shouldn’t be the favorites, stating that “I’m aware that at 38 I shouldn’t be the favorite, it should be someone probably in their 20s, but the three of us have been able to stay as the favorites which is great for us.”

Medvedev is the most promising young tennis player. He was the losing US Open finalist in 2019 and is currently fourth in the world, a clear career-high for him. Medvedev knows that he needs to be patient, and it all depends on how long Djokovic wants to play. The Serbian is 32 years old, and he believes he still has a lot of tennis power on him.

So, will Djokovic reign supreme once again in the Aussie territory, or will this 2020 Australian Open crown a new champ?
