History

In 1995 the League awarded Phoenix a franchise along with the new Tampa Bay team. Both began to play in the 1998 season. The Diamondback’s first game was against the Colorado Rockies, which they lost 9-2. By 1999 they had already won a Division title, taking the NL West with a 100-62 record.

The next year the team placed third in the NL West, but bounced back in 2001 and shocked the nation by winning the World Series in seven games.

In 2002, the defending champion Diamondbacks again won the NL West but fell in the division series to St Louis. The team would return to the NLDS twice more in 2007 and 2011 but have not made it back since.

From 2015 to 2018, the team finished third in the NL West twice, and in 2017 placed 2nd with a 93-69 record.

Titles

The year the Diamondbacks won the World Series, they went 92-70 in the regular season and finished 1st in the NL West. In the playoffs, they beat the Cardinals 3 games to 2 in the NLDS before dispensing of the Braves 4 games to 1. The playoffs that year was delayed because of the September 11 attacks, which resulted in the World Series stretching into November for the first time in history. The Diamondbacks took on the New York Yankees that year, and in a back and forth seven-game series, the Diamondbacks prevailed. They won the first two games and the last two games to take the title.

Famous players

The most famous Arizona Diamondback in the team’s short history is Pitcher Randy Johnson. Johnson pitched for the team in two tenures, one from 1999 to 2004 and the other from 2007 to 2008. He won a pitching triple crown with the team in 2002, pitched them to a World Series victory in 2001, and won 4 Cy Young awards with the team.

In terms of prestige, after Johnson is outfielder Luis Gonzalez, who owns many of the teams all-time batting records. Gonzalez is the leader in hits, at-bats, runs, doubles, home runs and RBI.

Roberto Alomar is another former Diamondback who is in the Hall of Fame. Alomar played for Arizona in 2004. For part of the season before getting traded to Chicago.
