Baltimore Orioles Betting Odds

Founded in 1901, the Baltimore Orioles moved around the Midwest before finally settling in Baltimore in 1953. Named after the official state bird of Maryland, the team plays its games at the Iconic Camden Yards, which was built in 1992 in Downtown Baltimore. History

The club was originally part of the Western League and played out of Milwaukee from 1894 to 1901. In 1902 the club was moved to St. Louis and re-named the Browns. Despite having trouble competing with the Cardinals, the Browns still managed to win a pennant in 1944, when the league was stocked with wartime replacement players. Ironically, they ended up playing the Cardinals in the World Series that year and lost in 6 games.

Just a few years later in 1953, the team was unable to pay for stadium maintenance, and owner Bill Veeck decided to sell Sportsman’s Park to the Cardinals and later sold the team to a group of Baltimore businessmen.

The new owners renamed the team the Orioles, and the Baltimore public received them very well. Playing out of Memorial Park, the team had a rough first season. They lost games and finished seventh in the AL.

With time, the team slowly became a force to be reckoned with, and in 1966 they finally returned to prominence. The Orioles would go on to win three World Series and five AL pennants between ‘66 and ‘83.

In 1992, after 33 years in Memorial Park, the Orioles moved into Camden Yards.

Titles

Both the 1966 and 1970 Oriole teams featured many of the same players. In 1966 they breezed by the LA Dodgers in 4 games. The next year they made it back to the World Series but were bested by the Mets. Not fazed by the upset, the Orioles stormed back and won 108 games in 1970 en route to winning the World Series that year against the Cincinnati Reds.

In 1993 the Cal Ripken era had already begun. Ripken won MVP that year after helping the Orioles to a 98-win season. The team went on to defeat the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS before blowing past the Philadelphia Phillies in five games to win their third World Series.

Famous players

The Orioles have 5 retired player numbers, the most recognizable being that of Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken was not only the record holder for most consecutive games played but also one of the most productive third basemen in league history. Ripken amassed 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 RBI in his 21 seasons as a Baltimore Oriole.

Murray ranks fourth in team history in games played and hits and was elected to the Baseball hall of fame in 2003.

Another notable player in Oriole history was Jim Palmer. Palmer also played his entire career with the Orioles, winning three Cy Young Awards and four Gold Gloves during the ’70s.
