History

The team’s origins begin in Sioux City, Iowa where they played as the Cornhuskers. In 1894, Charles Comiskey bought the team and moved them to St. Paul, MN, where he renamed them as the Saints. Just 6 years later, Comiskey moved the team again, this time to his hometown of Chicago, where they played at South Side Park in the Armour Square neighborhood. He again re-named them as the White Stockings, and in 1901 the team joined the American League and won the very first AL Championship that same year.

The team later changed its name to the White Sox and in 1906 won it’s first World Series against the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs. With its newfound success, the team moved into the famous Comiskey Park in 1910. The Comiskey family remained owners of the team through 1956.

After two decades of up and down success, the White Sox started having ownership problems in the late ’80s. After a long battle over funding for a new ballpark, the team guaranteed its future would remain in the south side of Chicago, as a new building was approved and opened in 1991.

With the new building, the team also started experiencing more success, recording 12 winning seasons between 1990 and 2005. During that time, 1st Baseman Frank Thomas became the face of the franchise, and the team returned to the World Series again in his final year and were able to win the championship after an 88-year drought.

Titles

The White Sox won World Series titles in 1906, 1917, and 2005, but are perhaps most famous for the 1919 World Series in which several players -including the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson- were accused of conspiring with gamblers to fix the games. The players involved ended up banned for life. The 2005 team that won the World Series did so under the guidance of Manager Ozzie Guillen. The team won 99 games and locked up the AL Central title before beating Boston and Anaheim to capture the pennant. The White Sox defeated the Houston Astros in four games to capture the World Series title

Famous players

The White Sox have retired 11 numbers throughout their history, the most recent being P Mark Buehrle in 2017. The others include DH Frank Thomas, 1B Paul Konerko, and C Carlton Fisk. Buehrle, Thomas, and Konerko were all part of the 2005 team that won the World Series in 5 games over the Houston Astros, although Thomas was not able to play for any of the playoffs due to a foot injury. Regardless, Thomas is perhaps the most celebrated player in White Sox history, having been a 5 time all-star and winning 2 AL MVP awards.
