History

In 1876 Cincinnati was granted a National League team but was quickly kicked out after the League discovered they were selling alcohol at games. The team then joined the American Association in 1882 but were re-incorporated into the National League 1889. From there they established themselves as a staple in Cincinnati life, the Reds moved into Crosley Field in 19 12 and stayed playing baseball on that same site through 1970. During that time the team won five NL Pennants and to World Series. They moved to Riverfront Park in 1970 when Crosley Field became untenable.

Riverfront park ushered in the existence of the Big Red Machine, which won 4 pennants and one World Series from 1970 to 1976. In 2002 Riverfront stadium was demolished to allow for the building of the Great American Ballpark on the same site. The Reds have played ever since.

Titles

The Reds have won Titles throughout their history, but at the same time have had to endure 3 different championship droughts of 20 or more years. Winners in 1919, they would not win again until 1940. After that, it was another 25 years before they would win in 1970. They would reign again in 1976 but would go without for another 14, when they won in 1990.

The 1990 Red Sox were the result of a team that started a rebuild in 1987 when Murray Cook took over as General Manager for the team. In 1990 he hired Lou Pinella, and his team stormed out of the gate, winning its first nine games. The Reds would stay hot the rest of the season, finishing first in the West by five games. In the playoffs, they beat the Pittsburg Pirates in six games in the NLCS before sweeping the favored Oakland Athletics. Pitcher Jose Rijo was named MVP after having pitched two victories including the 2-hitter in the final game four.

Famous players

From Johnny Bench to Pete Rose to Barry Larkin, the Cincinnati Reds have had a wealth of talent walk through their dugout. Bench is a 14 time all star and 2 time MVP winner. Rose was an MVP winner in 1973 and 17-time All-Star but was later banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame for having gambled on games when he was the manager. Barry Larkin played his entire 18-year career for the Reds, winning a World Series in 1990 NL MVP in 1996.
