History

The franchise originated in Grand Rapids, Michigan as the Rustlers. They competed in the Western League until 1900, when they were relocated to Cleveland and changed their name to the Lake Shores.

In 1901 the Western League became the American League, and the Cleveland franchise was again renamed the Bluebirds. The would go through several name changes in the first 10 years, and it wasn’t until 1915 that the franchise finally settled on the name Indians.

Early on, the team played their games at League Park. They first moved into Cleveland Stadium in 1932, where they would stay until 1993. In 1994 Progressive Field became the new home of the Indians, and they have been there ever since.

Titles

Despite their 119 year history, the Cleveland Indians have only won two World Series Titles, in 1920 and 1948. The first title was the result of a shakeup that started in 1916 when the team was sold to a Chicago Businessman named Jack Dunn. Dunn helped oversee a turnaround in the club’s fortune and four seasons after taking over, and the Indians won a World Series.

The other title won by the Indians was 28 years later, against the Boston Braves. The Indians had upset the Boston Red Sox in the AL Championship, preventing an all-Boston World Series. The Indians won the series in 6 games, capturing games 2, 3, 4, and 6. Indians’ star pitcher Bob Feller started games 1 and 5, but was unable to secure wins in either of his appearances.

Famous players

The Indians have 9 players’ numbers retired, the most recent being Jim Thome who played both first and third base for the Indians from 1991 to 2002 and again in 2011. Thome represented the Indians at the All-Star game in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He won the Silver Slugger award in 1996 while playing for the Indians. He retired as their all-time leader in home runs, walks, and strikeouts.

Feller also had his number retired for the Indians, in 1956. He still holds the position of all-time leader in wins and strikeouts by a pitcher.

Cleveland centerfielder Larry Dolby was the first black player in AL history. Dolby was a 7 time all star and a member of the Indian’s 1948 World Series team. The Indians retired his number in 1994.

Frank Robinson’s number 20 is also among the rafters at Progressive field. Robinson played OF for the Indians for several years before becoming the first black manager in MLB history when he took over the team in 1975.
