History

Originally the Tigers started playing their games at Bennett Park in Corktown, outside of Detroit at the turn of the century. The team stayed there for 16 years before it was torn down and turned into Navin Field in 1912. In 1938 Navin field was expanded and renamed Briggs Stadium. In 1961 the building was renamed Tiger Stadium, and the Team continued to play home games there until Comerica Park was built in Downtown Detroit in 2000.

Titles

The Tigers have won 4 World Series, in 1935, 1945, 1968 and the most recent in 1984. Their four wins tie them for fifth in Major League history with the Oakland A’s. There are five clubs tied for 4th place with five victories.

The 1935 team was chock-full with Hall-of-Famers including Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin, Hank Greenberg, and Mickey Cochrane all suited up for Detroit that year, combining for a 93-58 record during the regular season. In the playoffs, they won the pennant from the New York Yankees before defeating the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 2 in the World Series.

In 1945 the Tigers were helped by the end of World War II and the return of several players from military service. They won the AL pennant from the Washington Senators before facing the Cubs again in the World Series, which Detroit won in 7 games.

The next time the Tigers returned to the World Series in 68’, they faced the Cardinals in a rematch of the 1934 fall classic. The series went to seven games, and the Tigers hitters were able to overcome the Cardinals star pitcher Bob Gibson after going down 1-3 in the first four games.

In ‘84 the Tigers faced the San Diego Padres in the Fall Classic. That team was lead by manager Sparky Anderson, who was appearing in his fifth World Series as a manager. His team rode a 35-5 start all the way into the postseason. After splitting the first two games in San Diego, they came back and won 3 straight to take the series.

Famous players

There are 7 former players whose numbers are retired for the Tigers. The most recent players to receive the honor are pitcher Jack Morris and shortstop/manager Alan Trammell. Both were honored in 2018.
