History

The team had considerable success early on, appearing in the playoffs seven times between 1976 and 1985. They originally started playing their games at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, home to the minor league Kansas City Blues and the Negro League Kansas City Monarchs. In 1973 the Royals moved to Kauffman Stadium, part of the Truman Sports Complex that included Arrowhead Stadium, which is home to the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The stadium is named after Royal’s founder and original owner Ewing Kauffman. After their early success, the Royals remained competitive for a while but starting in 1995 they suffered a 28-year long playoff drought, one of the longest in the wild card era. They have captured the AL pennant four times in their history, in 1980, 1985, 2014 and 2015.

Titles

The Royals have won the World Series 2 times; once in 1985 and again in 2015. The 2015 team rode on the momentum of the success they had in 2014 when the Royals made the playoffs as a wild card team and ran all the way to the World Series, where they lost to the San Francisco Giants. In 2015 the team captured the division title in the regular season before beating the Houston Astros in the ALDS and the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS.

In the Championship, the Royals took on the NL East division champion New York Mets, who they beat in five games, taking the first two at home before losing game three in New York and bouncing back to win the next two. Catcher Salvador Perez was named the MVP, having batted .364 and caught every inning of the series minus the final frame in game 5.

Famous players

The Royals have had many prominent players on their roster over the years, both on the field and in management. Third baseman George Brett, who had 3,154 career hits -the most ever by a third baseman- is one of the most notable. Brett played for the Royals for his entire 20-year career, accumulating over 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a career .300 batting average. He is one of only four players in history to achieve that feat.

Second Baseman Frank White is another notable figure in Royals History; White played 18 seasons for the Royals and was part of their Championship team in 1985. He was also a five-time all-star and ALCS MVP in 1980.

Other notable figures in team history include Whitey Herzog, who managed the team in the late ’70s, Puerto Rican legend Orlando Cepeda, who played for the Royals in his final season in 1974 and Hall of fame pitcher Gaylord Perry, who also played his final season before retiring in Kansas City in 1983.
