History

Founded in 1833 as the Brooklyn Atlantics, the team joined the America Association in 1884 and five years later won the AA Championship, prompting a move to the National League for the 1890 season. The team had various nicknames before finally settling on the Dodgers in the 1930s. The name is derived from the term ‘Trolley Dodgers’ which was a common phrase in Brooklyn due to the high trolley traffic in the city. The Dodgers won the NL Pennant 12 times during their stay in Brooklyn, and in 1955 won the World Series.

In 1947 the team made history, signing Jackie Robinson to their roster. Robinson was an instant success, winning rookie of the year, and to this day his career in baseball is regarded as a key moment in the American Civil Rights movement. Thanks in part to the Dodger’s willingness to integrate, they won six pennants between the years 1947 and 1956.

In 1950 the Dodgers were bought by Walter O’Malley, a real estate tycoon who wanted to build a new stadium in Brooklyn. Met with resistance from city officials over the use of land for a stadium once air travel became the prominent mode of transportation for pro baseball clubs, O’Malley began to consider the west coast as a destination for his team and after convincing the Giants, their fellow NL Rival in New York, to move with them the deal was done.

Titles

Collectively between their time in New York and LA, the Dodgers have won 6 World Series Titles. Only one, in 1955 was in Brooklyn, while the other five, in 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981 and 1988 have all been in LA. Recently the Dodgers have been knocking on the door, having played in two consecutive World Series in 2017 and 2018, losing both series.

Famous players

Obviously, the most famous Dodger of all time is Jackie Robinson, as his number is retired in all 30 Ballparks across the league. However, being one of the older franchises in the league, the Dodgers have been the home of several great players over the years, including Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, and Don Sutton.

Koufax was a standout pitcher in Brooklyn, winning three Cy Young awards and four World Series. Campanella was an eight-time all-star andt hree-time NL MVP catcher. Sutton played 16 of his 23 seasons for the Dodgers and is seventh on the all-time strikeout list with 3,574.

Although his number is not retired, outfielder Gary Sheffield owns most of the team’s batting records. He is first in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and on-base plus slugging.
