One of the oldest teams in baseball, the Phillies have been around since 1883, always playing out of the National League. They went their first 77 years without winning a World Series, however, making them the last of the original MLB teams to win a title. History

Founded as the Quakers, the team soon changed its name to the Phillies later that year. They played their games out of recreation park in Philadelphia for their first three years until moving into the Baker Bowl, which served as their home until 1938. During that time the team won only one pennant, in 1915.

The team started experiencing success in the mid to late ’40s after they had moved into Connie Mack Stadium. In 1950 the Phillies made it to the World Series against the Dodgers, where they were swept.

The Phillies fell back into obscurity after that, highlighted by the 1964 season in which the team was 90-60 in September with 12 games to play, but managed to lose 10 in a row and fell behind the St Louis Cardinals, who edged them out for the pennant that year.

The Phillies had a run of three straight division titles from 1976 to 1978 and ended up winning their first World Series in 1980. After the victory, the Phillies went back to losing for almost a decade but made it back to the World Series in 1993 when they lost to the Blue Jays.

In 2001 the team moved again, this time to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Since the move, they have won 5 more division titles, two pennants, and another World Series victory in 2008.

Titles

While the 1980 World Series victory was a monumental event for the Phillies, the 2008 win was a breeze. The Phillies cruised to a second straight division title and defeated the Brewers in the division series before taking down the LA Dodgers in five games in the NLCS. In the World Series, the Phillies again showed dominance, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in 5 games.

Famous players

Some of the famous players to wear Phillies uniforms include pitcher Jim Bunning, who was a 9-time all-star and three-time strikeout leader who also was later elected to Congress.

Third baseman Mike Schmidt played his entire 18-year career for the Phillies and was an All-Star for 12 of those years. He was also a ten-time gold glove award winner and six-time silver slugger award winner.

More recently, players such as first baseman John Kruk, Pitcher Curt Schilling and first baseman Jim Thome are also well-known Philadelphia Phillies players.
