History

Founded as the Allegheny baseball club of Pittsburgh in 1882, the team went by the name of the region of Pittsburg that it played out of, situated across the Allegheny River, just north of downtown. In 1890, the Alleghenys were accused of ‘pirating’ third baseman Lou Bierbauer from the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association. The team made fun of the accusation such to the point that they started calling themselves the Pirates the next season and eventually changing their name in 1912.

In 1909 they moved to Forbes field, located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. They stayed at the stadium for 61 years, winning three World Series Championships there.

In 1970 they moved to Three Rivers Stadium, where they won championships in 1971 and 1979. In 2001 they relocated again to PNC Park, where they have played ever since. The Pirates are one of seven teams to have won 10,000 games and one of four teams to have lost 10,000 games.

Titles

After winning a rapid succession of pennants in the early century, the Pirates won their first World Series in 1909. They would not win again until 1925. Then another 35 years before they again took the title in 1960 when Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a walk-off home run in the 9th inning to win the game and the series against the New York Yankees. That would be the Pirates’ last title until 1971 and ’79, which was the last time they were crowned Champions. In the 79 series, they again won in 7 games, that time coming back from being down three games to one. The Pirate’s Willie Stargell won MVP after batting .400 and racking up seven extra-base hits in the series.
