St Louis Cardinals Betting Odds

Capturing the awe and imagination of America’s heartland since 1900, the St Louis Cardinals are the winningest team in the history of the National League. They have captured 11 World Series titles dating back to 1926. Their most recent championship came in 2011.

The Cardinals are one of the most valuable franchises in all of the North American pro sports. Until expansion, the Cardinals were the only team in the country further southwest than Chicago, and they won over fans from Nebraska to Louisiana in the early years of radio broadcasting, as it was the only broadcast of a baseball game to reach those regions.

History

The team started as the St Louis Brown Stockings, and later just the Browns, of the AA where they won four championships. When the AA was disbanded, the team joined the National League in 1892. They were re-named as the Perfectos in 1899 before finally settling on the Cardinals in 1900.

From 1882 to 1892, the team played out of Sportsman’s Park in St Louis, which they shared with the second incarnation of the Browns from 1920-1953. During this time they won seven of their eleven World Series titles.

In 1966 the club moved into the first incarnation of Bush Memorial Stadium, where they stayed until 2005. The club won two World Series and seven NL Pennants during their tenure there.

For the 2006 season, the team moved across the street to the second Bush Stadium. They won another World Series in their first season at that Stadium and yet another in 2011.

Titles

After not having won a title in their first 20 years, the longest the Cardinals have ever gone without a title was one 18 year stretch from 1946 to 1964 and a 24-year pause from 1982 to 2006. Other than those two instances, the Cardinals have never gone more than 15 years without winning a World Series title.

Their most recent, in 2011 was a surprise considering that the team barely made the postseason. After a poor month of June, the Cardinals were ten games behind the Brewers for first place in the Central at one point in July. Thanks to a fallout on the part of the Atlanta Braves, the Cards crept into the final NL Wild Card Spot by posting an 18-8 record in September.

Once in the team beat the Phillies in five games at the NLDS and the Brewers in six games at the NLCS, they went on to face the Texas Rangers in the World Series. Down 3 games to 2 in the sixth game, the Cardinals played one of the most amazing game sixes in World Series history, twice coming back from being one strike away from elimination to win 10-9 in the 11th inning. The went on to win game seven and the series two days later.

Famous players

The Cardinals have 44 former players and managers in the Hall of Fame. Among the greatest names are Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Dizzy Dean, and Ozzy Smith. Mark McGuire famously broke the single-season home run record with the Cardinals in 1998 but was later found to have used performance-enhancing drugs while playing that season.
