Toronto Blue Jays Betting Odds

Originating in 1977, the Toronto Blue Jays are the second MLB franchise to be based outside of the United States after the Montreal Expos. Since the Expos moved to Washington in 2005, The Blue Jays are now the only team based in Canada. They are named after the bird that is native to the Toronto region, the Blue Jay, which also conforms to the color scheme of two of the other major sports franchises in Toronto, the Maple Leafs of the NHL and the Argonauts of the CFL.

History

The Blue Jays played their first game at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto on April 7th during a snowstorm. They won the game 9-5 against the Chicago White Sox, but would only go on to win 54 games in that first season. In the following years the team struggled to put together a winning record, but very gradually got better and by the 1983 season, the team put together a winning record, going 89-73 and finishing in fourth place in the AL East. They continued to improve over the next few seasons and in 1985 won an AL East title. They lost in the playoffs to the eventual World Series champion Kansas City that year.

The team took a step back in the following years, unable to re-claim the Divisional title. In 1989 they moved into a new stadium, then called the Sky Dome, that featured a retractable roof. The New building also marked an era of improvement for the team, leading up to back to back World Series in ‘92 and ‘93

Titles

After two ALCS appearances in 89 and 91, the Jays finally broke through and won the World Series in 1992. After a 96-66 regular season in which they weren’t swept in any series, the Jays lined up against the Oakland A’s in the ALCS, who they beat in six games. That propelled them to the World Series for the first time in their history, where they defeated the Atlanta Braves in six games and became the first Canadian team to win the World Series.

The Jays followed up that season by winning back to back World Series in 1993. That year they finished 95-67 and played the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS, beating them in six games before going on to face Philadelphia in the World Series. Game four of that series was memorable for the Jays coming back from a 14-9 deficit in the rain to win 15-14 in the highest scoring game in World Series history. The Jays went on to win the series in six games.

Famous players

Given their relatively short history, the Blue Jays have had only a few players get elected to the Hall of Fame:

Many of the Clubs records are held by 1B Carlos Delgado, who played for Toronto from 1993 to 2004. He leads the club all time in plate appearances, slugging percentage, on-base plus slugging, runs scored, total bases, doubles, home runs, RBIs and walks

Second Baseman Roberto Alomar played for Toronto during their World Series years.

Pitcher Roy Halladay played for Toronto from 1998 to 2009 and set the club record for wins in a single season with 22 in the 2003 season.
