Patriots vs Chiefs Betting Odds, 2019 AFC Conference Championship Game Preview

Tom Brady takes yet another stab at an AFC Championship on Sunday, this time against the up and coming Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs plowed through their competition in the regular season, locking up home-field advantage for the playoffs by posting a 12-4-0 record. They also finished first in the league in total points and total yards per game. While the Chiefs may have youth and skill on their side, they are going up against the most experienced playoff team of the last 15 years in New England. The Patriots will be appearing in their eighth consecutive AFC title match and 10th in the previous 12 years.

To get here, the Chiefs took a road paved in gold. They began the season by winning their first five games. In week six, they came up against these very same Patriots and lost a close one, 40-43. In that game, the Patriots roared out to a 24-9 lead by the end of the first half but saw Kansas City jump back in the second half with 21 points of their own, tying the game at 40 before the Patriots kicked a field goal with no time remaining to claim victory. After the loss, the Chiefs rattled off four more wins before confronting the LA Rams in a Monday Night scoring bonanza that finished 54-51 in favor of LA. The Chiefs then dropped games in weeks 15 and 16 to the Chargers and the Seahawks but were able to lock up home-field advantage through the playoffs with a win in their final game of the regular season against the Raiders.

The Patriots, on the other hand, were a .500 team for the first four weeks of the season before catching fire and winning five in a row. That allowed them to climb on top of a very weak AFC East, where the division’s second-best team, the Miami Dolphins, finished the year with a losing record. Safely in a playoff spot, the Patriots got through the rest of the regular season with a record of 4-3, which put them in the second seed with an 11-5-0 record. In their divisional round matchup against the Chargers, the Patriots showed their experience by outscoring a high-octane Charger offense 41-28.

Look for the Kansas City offense to overwhelm a Patriots defense which was average at best during the regular season. KC simply has too many weapons for them to handle. Between Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill, TE Travis Kelce, and RB Damien Williams, the Chiefs look more like the team ready to take a trip to the Super Bowl. Still, these are Tom Brady’s Patriots that we are talking about here, so you can never count them out.
