San Francisco 49ers Betting Odds

Tale of Two Seasons

To say the 2017 San Francisco 49ers came stumbling out of the gate is an understatement. The team went 0-9 in its first half of the season, getting outscored 213-143 in that span. It was the worst start in franchise history. In October the team decided to make a change that would reverse their fortunes completely. They traded for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who made his first start in week 13 and went on to win five straight games, three of which were against teams that would eventually make the playoffs. When all was said and done, the 49ers ended the 2017 season with a 6-10 record, which was an improvement on their last two seasons. So San Francisco 49ers betting in 2018 is going to be an interesting venture; will the team continue the success it found under Garoppolo, or will they regress back to their early 2017 season form?

Positive vibes

There is a good feeling surrounding this team after how last year ended. 49ers betting odds are up after they drafted outside tackle Mike McGlinchey of Notre Dame with the 9th overall pick in the 2018 draft and signed cornerback Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks to a 3-year contract. The Sherman signing helps them deepen their cornerback position, which was one of the team's weak spots in 2017. As for McGlinchey, the 49ers will hope that he has what it takes to replace Trent Brown, who was traded during that same draft. Other than that, they have all of their major pieces returning. Garoppolo along with running back Jerick McKinnon has already taken the field in OTAs. Wide receivers Marquise Goodwin and Pierre Garcon are nursing injuries still but should recover soon. Linebackers Malcom Smith and Reuben Foster are also making a return this year, meaning that all the important pieces from 2017 will be major contributors again in 2018.

What team shows up in 2018?

The big question is if the 49ers will pick up where they left off at the end of last season or if they will regress back to the 0-9 team that started 2017. Our NFL sportsbook has them just ahead of the Seattle Seahawks with regards to odds for winning their division, so the matchups between those two teams should determine what -if any- playoff chances the 49ers have. How they do will also depend a lot on if Garoppolo can continue to have his late-season form. He was undoubtedly the catalyst for the turnaround in the bay last season, and it is hard to imagine the 49ers having any success without him being a major contributor. The 49ers will start the 2018 season on the road, where they play 3 of their first 5 games. This will be a deeper, more in-synch 49ers team than the one that started 2017, so don't expect them to be as bad as they were starting out last season. How they hold up in terms of consistency throughout 2018 may be a different matter, however.
